The better lifestyle sales pitch

Yahallo, Upstarts!

Today, I thought to myself, “Wow, I’m getting fat. I need to lose weight.”. But at the same time, I also figured that I needed to be more productive, because if I let myself get into a full tangent about exercise and nutrition, I’d procrastinate even MORE on writing newsletters and be even MORE late on my submissions.

Which is not something I should let happen at UA (but it does happen, so please remind me if I let myself slip again).

I made a goal last post to post consistently, and the first week after, I’ve already fudged it. It really sucks to relapse into the bottom after making such a declaration, but all I can do at this point is forgive myself and try to do better.

And so another thought came to me. What if my shit lifestyle is holding me back from being the most productive? And that process of reading up and thinking up and cooking up is what I’ll be sharing with you today.

Today’s agenda is designed to:

✔ Use sales tactics to convince you to improve your lifestyle

✔ Give a different perspective on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle

✔ Get you started. Now.

Why lifestyle?

I was watching a twitch streamer who claimed to have gone from 330 pounds to 240 pounds, and they said that the experience changed their life.

They fixed a lot of their eating habits, started exercising a lot, started sleeping better, and they shifted to a much healthier lifestyle. They claimed their mood is better, that they have more energy, that they can do more in a day.

Those are amazing benefits. But I believe there is a different, more nuanced origin to how all of these things came about.

What really improves the quality of someone’s life?

This is a chicken or the egg type of question. But I want to ask, in the example above, did the life of that streamer in the example improve before or after they lost weight and changed to a better lifestyle?

The way the story is told is that they lost weight and then had an improved life. The story is always told that way, where losing weight is the source of happiness, that everything improved in their life after losing weight.

But I’d argue that actually, they improved their life first, and then they lost weight.

For them to lose weight, they needed to fix their eating habits, a sign of a healthy lifestyle with good benefits. They also started exercising, which has even more benefits, not just physically, but also psychologically. They even slept better, another big sign of a healthy lifestyle with various benefits.

The item on this week’s agenda

This week, I’m going to test out a premier marketing strategy on you. Or rather, you’ll do it for yourself.

I was watching a kind of script on YouTube where the technique of the marketer was all about doing your best to help the client and customer convince themselves that they want the service. And then whenever there was a concern, then you, as the marketer, would jump in and help alleviate it.

Follow the mission, buckle up and ready your fingers to type into the reply box of this email. You’ll benefit a lot from typing down your response and doing the work, it’ll be great.

MISSION DESCRIPTION

First, write down your goal. Here at UA, we love having the goal in mind, always.

Second, read up on all the benefits of getting a better lifestyle. I’ve included some of my understanding based on what I’ve read and understood in the next sections in the form of hyperlinks and biased summaries. It’s best, however, to always personalize it for yourself, because people have different values.

Third, write down every reason you can as to why you’d want those benefits. Include stuff in general and stuff that’s more specific to your goal. Be honest to yourself.

Lastly, if I (through you), have sold this concept of improving your lifestyle to you, then write down the first thing you’ll do to improve your lifestyle.

EXAMPLE

“My goal is to make a newsletter with a consistent and reliable posting schedule for at least a year!”

“Favorite benefits of having a healthy lifestyle:

1. Waking up rested and comfortable!
2. Consistent levels of energy!
3. More motivation to do things I need and want to do!
4. Better fits of clothes on my body so my fashion can improve!
5. More quantity and quality of work for less effort!
6. Increased life satisfaction and happiness!
7. Better management of health!”

“I’m going to bed early and keeping my phone away from arm’s reach while in bed!”

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle

Because, of course, I need to sell you on living a better life.

Sorry for the sarcasm, it’s unfair, I know. People know of general, life changing advice that genuinely changes people’s lives like, “I need to eat healthier”, “I need to exercise more”, “I need to get a good night’s sleep” anc then turn around and eat junk food, sit down all day and stay up to ungodly hours at night.

I’m trying to convince myself too, not just you, the reader, if you haven’t noticed.

Selling you and me on eating better

Eating better seems to be the secret hero of having a better life. Does that statement sound exaggerated? It probably isn’t. It’s probably understated, actually.

Just having better nutrition makes you more healthier. It sounds so stupid to say it like that, but hear me out.

Better nutrition means a stronger immune system, resistance to disease, longer lasting parts. Things like your heart, your lungs, your back, your knees, they’ll last longer. Sounds obvious, again, but health is something with unforeseen value. I bet it’ll be much harder to do anything without a knee. Or your back, lungs, or heart for that matter.

Your food literally affects your mood and energy level. Serotonin is produced mostly in your gut and is influenced by what you eat. Serotonin is a big factor in your mood as well as things that also have a big factor on your mood like sleep and appetite.

Your physical and health are that deeply linked. The connection is literally in the gut.

Plus, if you’re healthier, you will be struggling with your body’s physical limitations less. That’s another thing that can’t be understated. With proper nutrition, you’ll have a good amount of energy to actually complete the tasks that will lead you to your goal.

Imagine trying to do work that you really hate, that really annoys you. It must be difficult, right? Now imagine doing it on an empty stomach. How much worse that experience get?

The other side is also affected. Being overweight is also unhealthy. Imagine trying to go on a run, let’s say to the nearest convenience store. Shouldn’t be too difficult, no? Now imagine doing it with another hundred kilos of fat and blubber. How much more difficult is that? As someone who is pretty fat and needs to lose weight, let me tell you. Being fat is draining. Just existing can be exhausting.

Wow, all this self deprecation is kind of giving me the energy to work out later.

Quick tangent on two more things I noted from stuff I read. Apparently, coffee can be good for you in proper amounts (around two to four cups) while the theoretical best eating method for productivity is small, frequent meals (healthy snacks).

Selling you and me on exercising better

Exercise is another slice of the getting healthier pie I slapped onto you in the previous section, so all those benefits of physical and mental health apply. The two benefits are linked, and I hope you get that by now.

But it seems that the more active you are, the happier you are. The more you enjoy life. Just being active seems to make you have a better life.

Cool. Instant magical way that you’ll never believe would make your life better.

I have a weird hypothesis about this. Nothing scientific really, just a beep theory, I guess. Man, I miss MatPat. The theory energy is really flowing in me right now.

I believe that a part of exercising is actually about self-improvement. It’s linked to Maslow’s Hierarchy, not just about improving your physical state, but it’s a goal involving the top of his hierarchy of needs. It probably involves Roger’s Humanistic Theory which is all about how people want to be closer to their ideal self. It’s clearer when you think about exercising as one of those legendary Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timebound goals. Think about it.

Exercising is always about improving your ability to do one thing or another, whether that be your strength or endurance, or ability to perform a certain activity. Not to mention, you can definitely measure it, whether it be in how much your body improves, how much you can lift, or something else, there are metrics everywhere. Of course, exercise is achievable in many ways, and it’s always relevant too, either as a hobby or as a means for your health. As for time-bound, well, don’t you want to get a great beach bod just in time for summer? Or don’t you want to make it to that next lifting goal?

I find it crazy amazing how linked exercise is to self-improvement. Every breakup I see is always met with the “Just go to the gym” advice, as in generally meaning “Go become a better you”.

Truly magical.

Selling you and me on sleeping better

Another thing I’m guilty of slacking on, especially since I’m writing this at 3am in the morning. It may be the highest priority among the things I need to work on even though it might be the easiest among the three to fix.

Some say that sleep is more important than food and even compare lack of sleep to torture. Lack of sleep lowers performance and lowers productivity.

Just these things alone should be reason to sleep better. Not only does it feel good, but it also magically improves your life.

If you want a surefire, magical way that’ll make you better, sleeping properly looks to probably be the easiest of the bunch. Still not super easy, because I’m sure there are tons of distractions and temptations that keep people like you and me from sleeping properly, but compared to the previous two, it’s definitely one of the easier ones to accomplish with one of the most obvious benefits.

So what now?

If you were convinced, get on that mission right now. Let’s improve our lives together.

I promise that I’ll go exercise right after I post this newsletter.

If you can, let me know how it went for you, so that I can sleep better knowing that this actually helped. And you can sleep better knowing you were able to change your life too.

Upstart tangents…

🧠 Listen and learn: Chris Do from The Futur explains a “$6500 sales script” that inspires the item on this week’s agenda.

🤯 Strange thoughts: What comes first, thought or action? Let’s give an example. Do you love yourself, which is what brought you to making a decision to have a healthy lifestyle? …Or do you first make a healthy lifestyle, which then proves that you indeed love yourself? Does a statement become true on thought or on action?

You’re an upstart with an agenda…
